Australian Battery Tech Working in Utility Market: But Tesla Batt Day Suggests Hornsdale & Other Battery Sources & Types to be Tested & Possibly Utilized.

SITUATION:
Hornsdale battery contributing to battery utility operations in Australia.
Could be alternative battery for Tesla and other EVs.|
Storage capacity was 129 MWh or 2,K MWH for Model 3s or 10 M smartphones.
System’s owner, the French renewable company, Neoen.
Company Is considered a success in its applications.

SIGNIFICANCE:
Hornsdale use allowing renewable energy to supply most or all electricity.
Hornsdale battery allowing region’s electric utility to opt out of this spot market.

With Hornsdale success now the plan is to expand its capacity by 50 percent.
Maker Neoen claims battery has already saved customers tens of millions.
While simultaneously making the region’s grid less susceptible to blackouts.
Meantime, Tesla has announced use of cheaper Cathode batteries.
Musk urged mining companies to dig up more nickel.
Number of other battery technologies are in development.
Notably flow batteries—that may be better-suited to this sort of storage.
Other battery technology will compete with alternate energy storage methods.
Such as Pumped hydro, compressed air, & heat storage, already in use in limited cases.
Others, like using electricity for the production of fuels, are still in development.

TESLA Actions:
Tesla working with the Chinese company CATL on two new battery chemistries:
A low-cobalt battery pack design that could cost as little as $100 per kWh.
Cobalt-free iron phosphate design that could cost as little as $80 per kWh.
Tesla hoping batteries can function for million miles before being replaced.
Tesla made claims  about its battery plans at “investor day” event on Sept 22.

Solar Charge as Possibility:
Batteries can soak up surplus solar power during the daytime.
Then distribute the solar charge customers overnight.
Only a fraction of US electricity demand will require more storage capacity.
Capacity that might not be cost-effective at current prices.

STATS:
The Hornsdale battery might have been the biggest in the world when first produced,
Capacity is still tiny compared to US electricity demand.
US consumes roughly 10 terawatt-hours each day.
More than 70,000 times the capacity of the Hornsdale plant.
Battery costs continuing to fall & renewable power sources proliferating.
Demand for utility-scale battery installations to increase in the coming years.
BloombergNEF believes market will grow by 2023 to push cost per kWh to $100.
