Need To Act on opportunity to make Composting part of s City “100% Renewable Energy Program”
Establish Manhattan Beach as Leader for Environmental Mgt. & Responsibility
Composting business helps keep the community clean by composting leaves & recyclable organic materials.
From raw material, compost is created— Then sold to consumers or used on farms or in residential areas.
Composting businesses typically operate out of a large facility where composting takes place.
May pick up other people’s compost for a fee, or accept drop-offs for a fee.

Here is how Residential Organic works – Food/yard waste & yard waste goes in green cart;
Can be MIXED, UNBAGGED, and is transported to a composting facility.
Commercial (only) Food Commercial Business food waste is directly transported to Waste Management’s CORe Facility
There converted to an Engineered BioSlurry,
Transported to LA County’s Wastewater Treatment Plant in Carson, CA for anaerobic digestion & converted to energy.

What can & do we Compost?
Fruit and vegetable scraps
Egg and nut shells
Coffee grounds and tea bags
Weeds, leaves and bark
Grass and plant trimmings
Wood chips, sawdust
Wood ashes
Bread
Tissues and paper towels

WHERE DOES IT ALL GO?
Waste Management disposes the trash (gray cart) from Manhattan Beach at the El Sobrante Landfill,
Recycling (blue cart) is taken to a Waste Management Recycle America “MRF” facility;
“Material Recovery Facility” to be sorted by material type, then baled and sold as markets are feasible.
Organic waste (green cart) is first sorted at Waste Management’s Carson Transfer Station.

Yard waste is raked to sort out any debris and bagged food waste ;
Then is separated from the yard waste and transported to Waste Management’s CORe facility for processing
The clean yard waste is sold to various organics farms in California.

FOOD WASTE RECYCLING
The City has offered a citywide (residential and commercial) food waste recycling program since the fall of 2015.
Program is managed by the City’s hauler, Waste Management.
The cost for the program is already included in the monthly trash rate as part of core services;;

STATS:
Food scraps and yard waste currently make up 20 – 30% of what we throw away, even though these materials can be recycled through composting.
