Criminal behavior is a psychological disorder rather than willful action;
Causes of Crime – Desire for material gain is source of criminal activity;
Desire for control, revenge, or power leads to violent crimes
Violent crimes such as murders, assaults, and rapes
Violent crimes usually occur on impulse or the spur of the moment
Property crimes are usually planned in advance
Growing up with abuse or antisocial behavior;
Causes people to be more likely to mistreat their own children
Who in turn will often follow the same pattern
Research on brain activity investigated the role of neurochemicals
Substances brain releases to trigger body activity & hormones influencing criminal behavior.
Such a brain function could lead to greater risk-taking in life
Some criminals do not fear punishment as much as others.

Why a person would commit crimes:
• Biological, psychological, social, and economic reasons;
• Some consider a life of crime better than a regular job
• At least until they are caught.
• Usually combination of factors is behind why a person commits a crime.

SOLUTIONS:
What is the purpose of putting someone in prison?
Putting People in Prisons have four major purposes:
1. Retribution,
2. Incapacitation
3. Deterrence
4. Rehabilitation.

Retribution means punishment for crimes against society
Depriving criminals of their freedom is a way of making them pay a debt to society.
